What is love and how does it apply to fandom?

There are many aspects to love, but the one I will be focusing on today is the passive aspect of love. Love is accepting and appreciating things for what they are - not trying to change them. The saying goes, "If you love something, set it free."

There are at least two camps in the Nintendo-fanbase. One camp is stuck in the past, and wants Nintendo to be like they were during the days of the NES and SNES - making great games as well as providing a popular platform for third-party games that are "with the times" technologically. A lot of these type of fans are labeled "haters," which is unfair. Their love for Nintendo is more like that of a parent that pushes a child to succeed in school. The child is stupid and lazy, and so the parent has no choice but to push him or her because of the capitalistic world we live in. Personally, I think this is bad parenting, and it backfires later on during the child's teenaged years. The child eventually rebels and does exactly the things the parent didn't want him or her to do.

The other camp of Nintendo-fans is the more unconditionally-loving group. These are like parents who love a child unconditionally, whether he or she is doing well in school or not. If a child is doing badly in math, these parents don't yell at him or her, or pressure him or her harder. They are calm, assertive, and gentle, perhaps even encouraging the child to explore other areas in which he or she is more passionate in, like the arts.

When I think about animals, especially those that are wild, kept as pets, I see a two-sided situation. On the one hand, the animal is safe from dangers such as other animals, the elements, and hunger, but at the same time, the animal is not fully happy and is essentially caged and not allowed the freedom to be the wild animal it was meant to be. Of course, there are exceptional situations, like when baby-animals are found abandoned and raised by humans. They may not have the education needed to survive in the wild.

When we think of Nintendo as a wild animal, what is the more loving way to treat them? Let them go. Let them do whatever they want to. It is their life. If they don't want third-party support, maybe they actually don't want it. Maybe they don't want GTA V. Maybe they think it's too violent. If they just want to make consoles focusing on gimmick after gimmick, that's their choice. If you truly love Nintendo, let them go.
