Xenoblade Chronicles X Review (Wii U)

I just beat Xenoblade Chronicles X...and it was glorious.

How would I describe it to someone that has never seen nor played this game before? It's a MSORPG (Massively Single-player Offline Role-Playing Game). It has a unique combination of scripted events with voice-acting, as well as a vast open world for one to explore. It's not a game for binary people - people who only like extremes. It won't satisfy those who only like fully open-world games, and those that only want a linear role-playing game from the traditions of Japan won't like it either. This is why I implore potential players to open their minds and take their time to learn the game.

This game is very overwhelming and esoteric; it creates new gameplay-systems and reinvents the wheel more than is necessary, a trend among Japanese RPG-developers, but it's worth learning it. Take each day at a time. Use the internet, read the digital manual, and go to the official NeoGAF thread about this game, and there is more information there.

The most obvious thing about this game is its technical merits. This is seriously the most technically impressive game on the Wii U. It's a gigantic open world with no load-times except during Missions and Fast-Travel. It's gorgeous, and rendered to look realistic and artistically creative at the same time. If you need a game to show off the Wii U's horsepower, look no further.

The soundtrack is subject to taste, and people will find its fusion of myriad styles very odd, but one cannot deny its production-values. Mika Kobayashi provides legendary vocals in the epic Tyrant battle-theme "Uncontrollable." mpi and David Whitaker provide singing-vocals and rap-vocals respectively to an initially awkward but eventually awesome regular battle-theme, "Black Tar."

I've read that a lot of Japanese players were disappointed that the story wasn't the focus of the game, but to be honest, I really liked the story that was there. I didn't expect much more than an excuse to play in an open world and ride giant robots, but what they crafted was awesome.

" Can we find the key to life?
I don't want to be apart.
There's a spaceship we can ride.
 Now it's time to ride."
