What is the point of saying "Bless you" after someone sneezes?

I don't see the point. Someone sneezes. You say "Bless you." What's the point? Are your words blessing the sneezer? Of course not. Are you saying that the sneezer needs to be blessed because he or she is sneezing, implying that he or she is in critical health? That is absurd as well.

The main problem of saying "Bless you" comes when someone is constantly sneezing without end. The sneezer is usually allergic to something. Do you stick to your dogmatic practice of saying "Bless you" after every sneeze? If it's a public forum, the act of saying "Bless you" further adds to the unwanted noise-level of the environment.

This brings me to my next point. Saying "Bless you" often feels like a nice way of saying "Shut the fuck up" to the sneezer. Every time someone sneezes, the blesser gets louder and angrier with each "Bless you." Have you ever noticed that?

Let us stop this pointless practice of saying "Bless you" after every sneeze.
