The Anti-Pit Bull Sentiment and Racism Are Not The Same Things

A few weeks ago, I was really into videos about dogs on YouTube, and I eventually found some videos on pit bulls. There is an alarming preponderance of evidence on their danger, but there is an equal and greater movement on their defense.

I was watching this documentary,

and in it was a lawyer who said one of the most illogical things. The narrator/documentarian told her about a pit bull attacking a baby, and one of the first things she asked was, "Was the baby crying?" Does she realize how illogical that question was? She was basically implying that it if the baby was crying, it was logical or okay for the pit bull, or any dog for that matter, to attack the baby.

The hyperbolic fervor that people display about defending pit bulls is really disturbing and pathetic. It is similar to how nerds get so angry about tiny little details that are wrong in movies. Why don't they put their emotional passion toward something more meaningful and beneficial to humanity?

That's the other funny thing. Have you ever noticed that animal-lovers love animals more than human beings? They don't care if humans die, but if an animal is mistreated, oh no, they will get up in arms about it.

Here is the point that these pit bull defenders don't get. Pit bulls are animals; they can be unpredictable, at least to us humans, who are not fully aware of their cues. Pit bulls are very powerful, have dead-spots where pain is not felt, and they are thus dangerous. You can be lucky, have a gentle pit bull, be a regular dog-owner, and not have to train it; that is possible. But what if you're not lucky? You have a ticking time-bomb on your hands. You should not put yourself, your family, or your neighbors at risk. That is the point of anti-pit bull legislation.

These laws are not saying that pit bulls are evil, or all pit bulls are dangerous. The law is for the protection of the general public. In an uncontrolled populace with untrained people, it is more dangerous to allow pit bulls than to disallow them. This legislation is for safety - the safety of human beings.

I feel like these pit bull defenders have nothing better to do with their lives than to demonstrate in front of legislative buildings and lobby for these dogs' rights. They may have no other passion in life than their pit bulls. That is pathetic.

This is not the same as fighting for the abolition of racist laws. It is not a clear analogy. Pit bulls were bred for fighting. Human beings were not. Animals have less control over their actions. People are more likely to be able to control their angry, fear, insecurity, and not kill people. Please don't equate anti-pit bull laws with racist laws of the past. I understand that you want something to fight passionately about, but this is not it. Look at the facts. Think of the people, not just the animals.
