The dark side of love. The term "overrated" is overused and childish.
I'm not saying that I believe this, but if the world is balanced, then the love of something will inspire an equal and opposite hate.
In the world of videogames, if a game is lauded and loved by many, there will be many people mystified by its success and ready to spew hateful vitriol at it. In the rap-world, these people are called 'player-haters.' In the world of internet-videogame-commentary, one of the most common retorts to such lofty games is that they are "overrated."
I disagree. To call a game like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time overrated doesn't make one look smart or superior to others. It makes one look childish and ignorant.
Why do people call things overrated? The reasons are fear of what they do not know; ignorance of what makes the object-in-question so great; and a subconscious but desperate cry for attention.
My sister is a player-hater. Before she even tried a Wii, she was hating on it so hard, it was painful. I can see her point now, though, however latent it was between her words. People were in love with Wii before they even tried it themselves, so she saw the stupidity in that. Let me ask you a question, however. Given an equal amount of ignorance, is it better to love something or to hate something? What makes you feel better about yourself? I would say that it is better to love; I feel better when I feel positive, loving thoughts, rather than skeptical, negative thoughts.
A lot of people view being-critical as a more intelligent disposition than being positive and happy. Why is this? There is that saying that "ignorance is bliss," but is that really true? Bliss is about being enlightened about what is positive, rather than being ignorant about what is negative. One can know the negative mentally, but perceive the positive and let it soak one's being and provide happiness. One can know the faults of a game, and still love a game, whereas another person with the same knowledge can know the same faults but not be able to achieve happiness. Who is smarter?
