Tips for The Last of Us (Survivor and Grounded)
Don't ever craft Health Kits
Don't ever craft Health Kits, especially in Grounded. In Grounded, you are two or one hit from death all the time, whether you have full health or not, so it's a waste to craft a Health Kit for just one or two hits. Instead, if you are full on Alcohol and Rags, craft a Molotov Cocktail.
Play through the game on an easier difficulty-level first
Play through the game on the easier difficulty-levels first so that you learn where enemies spawn, and their travel-paths. You don't get Listen Mode, so this will be very important.
Ignore items that are hard to reach
As a gamer that likes to check all the nooks and crannies for items, you might be tempted to get as many items as possible, but if you're in a place full of Clickers, just stealth past them. Take the easy way out.
Take advantage of AI teammates
If you're in a battle-scenario where AI is helping you, take advantage of them. Their damage-output is far less than yours, but eventually, they can take out enemies. You might have to reposition yourself from time to time to get them to move up. Having a smartphone around to pass the time also wouldn't be remiss.
Master melee-combat
You can defeat Runners without getting hit, even without a Bottle or Brick. Just sprint while backpedaling, and wait for the Runner to attack. He or she can lunge (1 attack), attack twice, or attack three times in a combo. Know which attack it is, and dodge it. Afterwards, you can sprint in, and mash that square-button.
Be on the lookout for random Bricks and Bottles that are thrown at enemies by AI-compatriots. You can then grab your enemy with the triangle-button and one-shot them with the square-button.
The bow is still good
The bow will still one-shot Runners and humans (that are not wearing armor) in one hit.
Patience
Patience is very important on Survivor and Grounded. If you try to go balls-to-the-wall, you will likely die very quickly. Try to take out as many enemies silently so that you don't have to deal with as many enemies if you are spotted.
Ignore the urge to kill
As someone that likes to kill silently in videogames, I had to sometimes tell myself to not go for the kill. Sometimes just sneaking through an area is the smarter thing to do.
Learn from each death
You will die a lot. Learn from each death, instead of becoming emotional. Put enemy-paths into memory. If you were spotted even though you were crouched, remember how much pressure you put on the analog-stick and soften the pressure next time. There is one set of stairs in particular where you will actually speed up going down them even though the pressure you're putting on the analog-stick is the same as on a flat surface. Ease up on those stairs. Go extremely slowly, and walk intermittently.
