Limbo
Uncertain of his Sister’s Fate, a Boy enters LIMBO
This is a fantastic game. Why?
1. It is atmospheric. It is creepy, spooky, scary, whatever you want to call it; it is also mysterious.
2. The controls are basic, but the gameplay is complex. There are two buttons in the game: one for jumping and one for all the context-sensitive actions. It's all it really needs. The controls are sometimes not as precise as I would like them and they have weird nuances, like if you hold down the jump button, you will eternally make little hops. It is hard to make consecutive jumps without stopping. For example, to make two jumps in a row with little to no stop in-between, you have to jump, stop, and then jump again. If you press the jump button immediately after you land, you will do this awkward, short jump and fall to your death.
3. The puzzles are usually intuitive, except for the later ones, which get more and more complex to the point of absurdity. They do not exist in the natural world, but then again, we are not in the natural world, so that makes sense. Still, I started to miss the simpler puzzles of the earlier levels.
4. There are no "levels," per se, so there is no stop in the action, although there are sometimes long sections of mindless running between puzzles.
5. The story is up for interpretation at its maximum. The theories people have come up with and the imagery and emotions that the game induces is just mind-blowing. Unlike Lost, where the creators are just yanking your chain for 6 seasons, this is just a single video game, and it is refreshing to see a game which doesn't make you sit through inane cutscenes for the sake of saying it has "high production value."
Why might it be bad?
1. There was 1 puzzle which was completely illogical and I would've never solved it without outside help. Other than that, however, after you solve a puzzle, you feel like a genius, so they're good overall.
2. The controls are not the greatest. One jump at the beginning while you're sliding down a hill suffers from wireless lag, so you have to press the jump button a little earlier than usual. As stated above, consecutive jumps when they are critical, are hard to perform.
3. The crazy "Die 5 Times or Less" Achievement is nuts. Even if you have completed the game, you need to know exactly what to do - remembering exactly what comes next, and executing the puzzle perfectly. This would only be possible with a lot of pausing, and perfect memory or with a walkthrough at hand. Playing normally for fun, you will never get this Achievement, which takes you out of the "gaming-for-fun" mindset, which gaming should be: fun!
